Why Cracked Teeth Hurt

When the outer layer of a tooth is damaged, normal chewing can cause small movements in the cracked pieces.

Common Types of Cracks

1. Craze Lines (Infraction)
Tiny, superficial enamel cracks, typically harmless unless they affect appearance.

2. Fractured Cusp
A broken corner of a tooth; often resolved with a crown—root canal only if the pulp is involved.

3. Cracked Tooth
A deeper crack that may extend below the gum; usually requires root canal therapy and a crown.

4. Split Tooth
A fully separated tooth in segments; partial salvage may be possible with endodontic care and restoration.

5. Vertical Root Fracture
A crack starting at the root and moving upward; often discovered late, potentially needing extraction.

6. Horizontal Root Fracture
Typically caused by a strong impact; commonly non-restorable and may require extraction.

Diagnosis & Advanced Imaging

Cracks can sometimes hide beneath the tooth’s surface, making them difficult to detect with standard tools.
Our practice uses digital imaging including CBCT and the operating microsope(Zeiss Extaro 300) to enhance visibility and pinpoint subtle fractures.
Early detection may allow for timely treatment options that help preserve the natural tooth.

Treatment Options

Crown or Restoration

Root Canal Therapy and Crown
: If the crack reaches the pulp, cleaning and sealing the canal is crucial to prevent or resolve infection.
Extraction
