A specialized treatment for addressing root tip infections and supporting tooth retention.

What Is an Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy
or (root-end resection)

is a specialized surgical procedure performed by an endodontist to remove infected
or inflamed tissue at the tip of a tooth’s root.
After removing the tip (apex) and any damaged tissue,
the end of the root is sealed to protect against future infection.
This approach may help preserve a tooth that would otherwise be considered for extraction.

  • What to Expect During the Procedure


    1. Incision & Access
     • A small incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the underlying bone and the root tip.

    2. Removal of Infected Tissue
     • The inflamed tissue and the very end of the root are carefully removed.

    3. Sealing the Root Tip
     • A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection. The gum is then sutured (stitched) to promote natural healing.

    4. Healing & Regrowth
     • Over the following weeks to months, bone grows back around the end of the root, restoring stability and function.


  • Recovery & Aftercare


    Mild Discomfort & Swelling
    : It’s normal to experience some tenderness or swelling post-surgery.
    An appropriate pain medication or anti-inflammatory will help manage any discomfort.

    Follow Your Dentist’s Instructions
    : This includes gentle brushing near the surgical site, possibly using a special mouth rinse,
    and avoiding hard or crunchy foods for a short period.
