🧬 What Is Tooth Resorption?

Resorption is a process where tooth structure is broken down by the body’s cells. It can occur internally (from inside the tooth) or externally (from the outer root surface). Early diagnosis can be important because treatment options depend on the type, location, and extent.



🔎 Internal vs External Resorption (Simple Overview)

  • Internal resorption: Starts inside the canal system; may be found on X-rays or after symptoms develop.
  • External cervical resorption (ECR): Starts near the gumline on the outside of the tooth; can be difficult to detect early on traditional 2D X-rays.


📸 Why CBCT May Be Recommended in Selected Cases

When resorption is suspected, 3D imaging can sometimes provide more accurate information about the size and location of the defect compared to 2D radiographs. Professional guidelines support CBCT when it is expected to change diagnosis or treatment planning, using the smallest appropriate field of view.



🧭 Treatment Is Case-Specific

Some resorptive defects may be managed with endodontic treatment and a coordinated restorative plan. Others may require surgical management, periodontal care, or may be non-restorable. Recommendations depend on imaging, symptoms, and overall tooth structure.
