Pain After a Root Canal: What’s Normal, What’s Not, and When to Call

🤕 Some Soreness Can Be Expected

Mild tenderness after root canal treatment is common, especially when biting, because the tissues around the root can be inflamed from infection or treatment. Many patients feel noticeably better within a few days, though recovery experiences vary.

✅ Common (Usually Temporary) Symptoms

  • Light to moderate soreness when chewing
  • Minor gum tenderness near the treated tooth
  • Temporary sensitivity in nearby teeth or jaw muscles

🚨 Call Us Promptly If You Notice

  • Swelling that increases or spreads
  • Fever or feeling ill
  • Severe pain that is worsening after 48–72 hours
  • An allergic reaction to medication (rash, swelling, trouble breathing)
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing (seek emergency medical care)

🧯 Safe Self‑Care Tips

  • Use OTC pain relievers as directed on the label, unless your physician advises otherwise.
  • Avoid chewing hard foods on the treated side.
  • Keep the tooth clean with gentle brushing and flossing.
  • Follow your endodontist’s instructions about temporary fillings and return visits.

🔎 Why a Tooth Might Hurt Later

If discomfort returns weeks or months later, common causes include a bite that needs minor adjustment, a new cavity or leakage around a restoration, a missed canal in complex anatomy, or a crack. Diagnosis is individualized and may involve clinical tests, radiographs, and in selected cases CBCT.
